Let’s celebrate Sauvignon Blanc

by Westgarth Wines April 30, 2026

International Sauvignon Blanc Day is a worldwide celebration of one of the world’s most aromatic, vibrant, and food-friendly white grape varieties. Held on the first Friday of May each year, in 2026, the wine world celebrates on May 1st through tasting and food pairing events that bring estates, wine lovers, and regions together. The grape’s exciting regional diversity is in the spotlight – from Loire Valley crispness and elegance to New Zealand’s exotic expressions – providing an opportunity for exploration.

Why does Sauvignon Blanc deserve the spotlight?

Like all the classic grape varietals, there are many tales about the origins of Sauvignon Blanc. Among recent theories is a convincing claim that the grape hails from France’s Loire Valley and is a cross between Traminer and Chenin Blanc. It produces single varietal wines in the Loire’s Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé, where records show it was widely planted by the 1500s. It also famously flourishes in Bordeaux, where it’s used in white blends and the region’s epic sweet wines.

Its genetic history is significant: Sauvignon Blanc is the co-parents with Cabernet Franc, of the internationally-loved Cabernet Sauvignon. Beyond France’s shores, this versatile variety has found outstanding success in New Zealand (where it has become the de facto flagship white grape), where it produces fresh wines with a core of exotic fruit. It also thrives in California, where, inspired by his experience in the Loire, Robert Mondavi created the Fumé Blanc style. Chile and South Africa are also important New World producers of Sauvignon Blanc.

Each region where Sauvignon Blanc grows, showcases distinct white wine styles – from mineral, elegant, and restrained, to tropical, aromatic, lush, and exuberant.

What are Sauvignon Blanc wine characteristics?

Color: Pale lemon to light straw.
Body: Light to medium-bodied.
Aromas and flavors: Lime, grapefruit, green apple, gooseberry, passion fruit, fresh-cut herbs, bell pepper, flint, wet stone.
Acidity: High.
Texture: Crisp, lively, zesty.
Style range: Mineral-rich with citrus and herbaceous notes in cool climates; tropical, layered, and aromatic with fresh acidic lift in warm regions.
Aging potential: Generally best enjoyed young, though leading Loire and oak-aged California styles can mature beautifully.
Food pairings: Goat cheese, oysters, white fish, green salads, asparagus, Thai cuisine, citrus-based dishes, and herb-led recipes.

Located in Chavignol, Domaine Edmond Vatan produces only 4,000 bottles annually. Vatan – often described as a winemaking legend in Sancerre – is tirelessly behind decades of vintages. The Clos de la Néore site sits just south of the prestigious Les Monts Damnés vineyard, nourished by Kimmeridgian limestone, where south-facing vines deliver an exceptional, articulate expression of Sauvignon Blanc.

Clos de la Néore is one of Sancerre’s most legendary wines, admired for its white fruit, citrus, and pineapple notes, framed by stony, herbal, and subtle aniseed hints. The palate is refreshing, pure and crystalline, balanced with an impressive length.

Established in Marlborough in 1985, Cloudy Bay is one of New Zealand’s winemaking pioneers and a globally-admired name for premium Sauvignon Blanc. Its vibrant, aromatic expression helped forge the region’s identity and put New Zealand wine on the world stage. Since then, Cloudy Bay has expanded into making acclaimed Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, with a focus on purity, precision, and pristine terroir expression.

The 2015 Te Koko features lively passion fruit, delicate smoky flint on the nose, and concentrated, layered, refined fruit on the palate, with vibrant acidity, closing in a long, elegant finish. Minimal new oak and part malolactic fermentation add body and balance the wine’s crispness.

A historic Pessac-Léognan estate, Château Smith Haut Lafitte is celebrated for its finessed, cellar-worthy reds, and elegant, textured white blends. Owned by the Cathiard family since 1990, the house is renowned for its biodynamic approach, precision winemaking, and singular terroir.

A light gold hue, the 2022 displays a fragrant nose of honeyed grapefruit, crushed stone, and lemon zest. The palate is rich, full, layered, and beautifully balanced, with a structure that’s almost red wine-like, showcasing vibrant, juicy precision. This white can be cellared up to 2042.

Founded in the early 1990s in Oakville, Screaming Eagle is a cult winery located in Napa Valley. Famed for its extremely limited production and impeccably crafted, much sought-after wines, the estate has achieved close to mythical status.

The 2016 Sauvignon Blanc displays gentle honeysuckle, peach blossom, and lemongrass, broadening into lime, pineapple pastry crust, and jasmine. Medium to full-bodied, it features a silky mouth with lively citrus and tropical fruit notes, enhanced by fresh acidity and a lingering, aromatic finish. Built to age, it’s now entering its drinking window, displaying honeyed complexity.

International Sauvignon Blanc Day unites regions, wineries, and wine lovers in a shared love of this versatile, expressive, food-friendly grape. Whether a Loire Valley style or a New Zealand icon, let’s raise a glass to the remarkable diversity of this legendary grape.
