Chateau Malescot St. Exupery

Ranked as Third Growth in the Bordeaux Classification of 1855, Margaux’s Château Malescot St. Exupéry dates back to the early 17th century. In 1697, it was purchased by Simon Malescot, who gave the property a new moniker; nearly two centuries later, the name was changed again after its purchase by Count Jean-Baptiste Saint-Exupéry. Sadly, the Count’s ownership was relinquished by his widow only 30 years later to pay the bills from his excessive lifestyle. Decades passed, and the property was neglected until in 1955 when the Zuger family bought the estate, dedicating the time and money it required to once again become a viable wine producing château. The estate’s 28 hectares of vineyards rest across five parcels in the Margaux commune, with the wineries and cellars in the town of Margaux itself. While Cabernet Sauvignon dominates at 50%, Merlot follows at 35%, with the remaining vineyards allocated to Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Growth is dense, with approximately 10,000 vines per hectare, and with ages of around 30 years. Malescot St. Exupéry utilizes stainless steel vats with local yeasts, and ages its Grand Vin for nearly a year and a half in new oak. The Château also bottles without filtration or fining. Château Malescot St. Exupéry continues to improve, and oenophiles have taken notice. Its signature wine is known for its robust silkiness on the palate, particularly after a five-year maturation. The Château also offers a popular second wine, La Dame de Malescot.
