Nestled between a giant of red (Pommard) and an equally compelling giant of white (Meursault), Volnay, based in the Côte de Beaune, has built a reputation for delicate, smooth and appealing Pinot Noir-driven wines.
It is considered the feminine counterpart to the more masculine, muscular Pommard, and the two have shared the spotlight for centuries. Receiving its own appellation in 1937, Volnay has no grand cru vineyards; however, more than 50% of its vineyards are rated as premier cru.
The land rests on the famous Côte d’Or slope, and enjoys excellent drainage, limestone soils and more than ample sunlight by facing the southeast. Top Producers: Domaine de Montille, Domaine Bouchard Pére et Fils, Domaine Marquis d'Angerville
