Chateau Pape Clement

The oldest wine estate in Bordeaux, and perhaps the most representative of Old World charm, Château Pape Clément was first planted in 1300 when gifted to Bertrand de Goth by his brother Berald upon Bertrand’s appointment as Archbishop of Bordeaux. The estate remained in the church’s possession for over 400 years until the onset of the French Revolution, after which it fell into public domain. Once second only to Haut-Brion, Château Pape Clément found its reputation somewhat diminished during the later 19th century and early 20th due to unfortunate climate conditions, suburban expansion and, most of all, the impact of World War I. Its purchase in 1939 by poet and engineer Paul Montagne, however, changed the château’s direction, and within fifteen years, Montagne revitalization efforts returned Pape Clément to its former glory. For the last several decades, Château Pape Clément has been under the ownership of French wine magnate and multimillionaire Bernard Magrez. Magrez advanced the château’s reputation for Grand Cru Classé, and established Château Pape Clément as one of the world’s most desired wines. In 2009, it received the coveted score of 100 from famed critic Robert Parker, positioning it among the finest of all Bordeaux. Under Magrez’s direction, second wines, Le Clémentin du Pape and Le Prélat du Pape Clément, were introduced in the 1980s. With a blend of nearly equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with minor additions of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, Château Pape Clément is a lustrous wine with complex notes of spice, fruit and flowers. Intensely aromatic, its beauty rests in its elegance as opposed to its full-bodied flavor, and is certain to enchant wine lovers for generations to come.
