Symington Family Estates: A legacy rooted in the Douro
With a history that stretches back over 350 years and 13 generations, Symington Family Estates stands as a pillar of Portugal’s wine heritage. From their stewardship of some of the Douro Valley’s most prestigious Port houses to their pioneering ventures in still and sparkling wines, the Symingtons have shaped the future of Portuguese wine.
A winemaking family with deep roots
The story begins in 1652 with Beatriz Leitão de Carvalhosa Atkinson, an ancestor whose lineage would eventually lead to the Symington family’s immersion in the Port trade. Fast forward to the 19th century, when the Symingtons formally established themselves in Porto. Since then, five generations of the family have worked to expand and elevate their wine estates, balancing reverence for tradition with a commitment to progress.
Few wine families in the world can match the Symingtons for their long-term dedication and personal investment in the land. Today, they remain one of the world’s leading family-owned producers of premium Port and Douro wines.
Johnny Symington’s era: 40 years of evolution
Johnny Symington’s recent retirement marks the end of a transformative era. Born in Porto in 1960 and joining the family business in 1985, Johnny played a key role in modernizing the company. Under his leadership — as Commercial Director, Joint Managing Director, and later as Chairman — the family’s four major Port houses — Graham’s, Dow’s, Warre’s, and Cockburn’s — experienced renewed global prestige.
He also helped oversee the launch of the family’s still wine production in 1999, introducing consumers to the expressive, terroir-driven wines of the Douro, Alentejo, and Vinho Verde. In recent years, the Symingtons even expanded beyond Portugal, releasing an English sparkling wine from Hampshire — a bold move that reflects the family’s international vision.
His contributions to wine tourism were no less significant, including the opening of acclaimed restaurants at Quinta do Bomfim and a visitor centre at Quinta da Fonte Souto in the Alentejo.
The next generation
The baton now passes to his cousin Rupert Symington, formerly CEO and now Chairman, and to Charles Symington and Rob Symington, who will serve as co-CEOs. Charles, the family’s Head Winemaker, brings a deep knowledge of the vineyards and a precision-driven approach to quality. Rob, representing the fifth generation, is an advocate for sustainability and innovation — two themes that will define the next chapter of Symington Family Estates.
A portfolio of icons
From legendary Vintage Ports to vibrant table wines, Symington’s portfolio reflects both diversity and excellence.
An undisputed icon of the Port world, Graham’s Vintage Port is defined by its opulence, structure, and longevity. Sourced from the family’s top vineyards — including Quinta dos Malvedos — this wine offers an explosion of dark plum, cassis, and fig, layered with dark chocolate, spice, and floral notes. Its richness and power are balanced by a remarkable freshness that ensures decades of graceful aging.
Known for its drier style, Dow’s Vintage Port is muscular, brooding, and intensely age-worthy. Crafted from old vines at Quinta do Bomfim and Quinta da Senhora da Ribeira, it showcases dense blackberry fruit, firm tannins, and notes of licorice, mint, and black pepper. A classic expression for serious collectors seeking structure and longevity.
The oldest British Port house, Warre’s offers a more elegant and aromatic take on vintage Port. Lifted notes of violets, wild berry, and spice lead to a supple palate with polished tannins and refined balance. It’s a wine of finesse, perfect for those who appreciate subtlety over sheer power.
Once famed in the 19th century, Cockburn’s has experienced a renaissance under the Symingtons. Its modern vintages are bold and expressive, with rich cherry and damson fruit, graphite, and exotic spice. Structured yet approachable in youth, this wine has regained its place among the Douro’s top-tier expressions.
A joint venture between the Symington family and Bordeaux’s Bruno Prats, Chryseia is one of the Douro’s most refined still wines. Crafted from Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca, it displays ripe dark fruit, floral lift, and precise minerality, wrapped in velvety tannins. A modern icon of the Douro’s still wine potential.
This legendary estate produces both Vintage Port and still red wines of exceptional character. The still wines are deep and savory, showcasing wild herbs, black fruits, and a graphite-driven finish. Vesúvio Ports, meanwhile, are monumental in scale yet balanced by aromatic lift and purity.
A future as storied as the past
Symington Family Estates is a living story of generational vision, resilience, and evolution. As they step into a new chapter, the Symingtons remain true to their founding ideals: integrity, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to the Douro. Their wines are benchmarks of quality and tributes to a family’s unbreakable bond with the land.
