Found in the heart of Italy’s famed, sun-drenched Langhe hills, the home of Nebbiolo, Giacomo Conterno is the quintessence of Barolo excellence. Celebrated for crafting some of the most powerful, cellar-worthy, and expressive Barolo wines in Piedmont, the estate is one of the key exponents of single-vineyard Barolo, Serralunga tradition, precision and quality Italian wine heritage.

Barolo heritage

The roots of the winery date to the early 20th century, when Giacomo Conterno founded the family winery in Monforte d’Alba. Giacomo wasn’t the first in the family to make wine (his father was already producing Barolo for their tavern). However, he was the first to bottle wines under the Conterno name, a significant step in establishing the estate and gradually developing its reputation. With a focus on the legendary crus of Francia and Cerretta (Arione was purchased later), Giacomo Conterno swiftly developed a reputation for Barolos of remarkable concentration and structure. The estate’s winemaking approach has always been led by a respect for site and vine, producing wines that speak of a precise sense of place.

After passing into the hands of Giacomo’s sons, today, the estate is led by the third generation – Roberto Conterno – who has built on these standards with careful cellar modernization while maintaining Piedmont wine tradition. The focus remains on minimal intervention through gentle hand-harvesting, careful grape sorting, extended macerations, and slow, patient aging in large Slavonian oak casks for long-lived Barolo.

Terroir & vineyards: Top-tier Nebbiolo

Giacomo Conterno’s holdings are given over exclusively to Nebbiolo and Barbera grapes. Its plots in Cascina Francia, one of Barolo’s most prestigious crus, are the cornerstone for their benchmark single-vineyard Barolos. The steep, south-facing slopes, rich in limestone and clay, support full ripening of Nebbiolo while retaining the grape’s hallmark acidity and intense aromatics. Low yields are routine, ensuring fruit concentration, while careful canopy management preserves freshness and phenolic balance. Robert practices organic viticulture, stressing the importance of the practice, especially for the first years of a vine’s development.

In addition to Francia, the estate manages parcels in Cascina Ginestra, contributing to a range of Barolos that showcase both the power and elegance of classic Nebbiolo from Monforte d’Alba. These vineyard sites produce traditional Barolo of outstanding longevity, capable of evolving gracefully over decades.

Winemaking philosophy: patience, precision, and purity

From vine to bottle, Giacomo Conterno focuses on laser-sharp precision and restraint. Fruit is harvested entirely by hand, often in multiple passes, to guarantee that only the finest berries undergo vinification.

Fermentation is traditional, with long maceration to tease out complex tannins and flavors. Robert has recently introduced some smaller “fermenti” barrels to contribute to wine quality during this stage of the winemaking process.

Aging takes place in large, neutral casks to enable the Nebbiolo to express its full aromatic potential, free from any overpowering oak. There are no shortcuts: this Italian fine wine is made to age gradually, slowly unfurling to reveal depth, structure, and nuance over the years.

The estate’s flagship Barolo, Monfortino Riserva, is only produced in the best vintages and sees around seven years’ aging before it is ready for release. The remaining Barolos undergo around four years of aging. The estate’s Barbera labels typically age for two years.

The house’s “First Wine” had its inaugural vintage in the 1920s, with Giaccomo wasting no time in showcasing his finest crus. This red displays sweet plum and sultana notes lifted by a dash of citrus. A plush and full-bodied mouth is edged by soft, sweet tannins, framing tones of cedar, cappuccino, forest floor, and ripe, dark fruit. Closing with a long, ample finish, this Barolo can cellar for years. When evolved, it can also offer immediate appeal for those who don’t want to wait.

Giacomo Conterno, Barolo Cascina Francia

Deep, layered, and powerful, this finely-grained red explodes with complex dark fruit, scorched soil, gravel, menthol hints, and signature tar. Its tannins are firm and expansive, imbuing the wine with assertive muscularity while retaining classic Barolo elegance.

Giacomo Conterno, Barolo Arione

Delicate and finessed, this wine offers lavender, sage, mint, cedar, and rose petal notes in a mid-weight, poised palate with remarkable balance.

Giacomo Conterno, Barolo Cerretta

The clay-rich soils of Cerretta are eloquently expressed in this concentrated yet finessed Barolo. The mouth features classic dark red cherry, plum, smoky notes, leather, and licorice, all framed by firm tannins.

Legacy

Giacomo Conterno is a gold standard Piedmont producer, making wines that are sought after both for the dinner table and the cellar.
