Indulge in the wines:
Alexander Valley in Sonoma, Northern California has built a reputation for balanced, satiny Chardonnay wines featuring a core of peach and apple, sweet spice, and honey notes underscored with nice chalky minerality and lively tartness. These characteristics enhance the holiday menu in delectable ways with the fruit intensity playing off dense meat of a turkey dinner or tasty savory flavors of pulse-rich vegetarian dishes while the fresh acidity cuts through the crispy, roast textures of this festive menu. Pumpkin pie gets a look in with this style of white as well with the light, spicy impression of sweetness (thanks to oak aging in the wine) going hand in hand with the dessert’s cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger.
Fun fact: No way is NASA going to let its astronauts miss out on "Thanksgiving Dinner". While on the International Space Station, these amazing men and women are treated to specially packaged meals that include turkey and cranberry sauce. Unfortunately, no wine allowed up there though!
We love Riesling for its range of expressions, and we admire Alsace in France for being home to such a wide selection of styles. This Riesling features deep, ripe orchard fruit, light smoky hints, and a wash of vibrant acidity with almond paste, lemon curd, toasty coconut and spice courtesy of a touch of noble rot. With its fruity freshness, we can see this going like a dream with crispy turkey and side dishes - but of there was ever a white wine made for pumpkin pie, this style is it! The gently sweet notes match perfectly with the spicy, honeyed notes of this traditional dessert.
Fun fact: Turkey reigns supreme at Thanksgiving dinner but delicious baked ham is not far behind as a traditional menu favorite - and this just meat loves this style of Riesling.
A white Burgundy is always a delight, and the Meursault style of Chardonnay offers a deliciously distinct and accessible expression of this iconic grape. Meursault winemakers have perfected the art of crafting wines that are a harmony of lush fruit, buttery toast, good minerality, and freshness that balance one another with a masterful tension. They go great with rich roasted poultry as well! Enhancing without overpowering, the fruity characteristics of this wine complement the luscious white meat of turkey while its tartness contrasts with the crisp, roasted textures typical of a Thanksgiving menu. Its velvety hints go hand-in-hand with savory, buttery dishes like mashed potatoes and creamy-style vegan and vegetarian recipes.
Fun fact: Back in early pilgrim days, because the early settlements were found so close to the coast, Thanksgiving menus featured an abundance of seafood – another category of dishes that pairs well with much white Burgundy.
When you think of Spanish wine, chances are the Godello grape isn’t the first that comes to mind, but this variety produces top-tier, food-friendly whites like our cellar pick. Coming from Galicia in northwestern Spain (a region nicknamed as making “Atlantic Wines” because of its cool, rainy location on the edge of this ocean), this wine illustrates how low-yields, native yeasts, and extended lees aging in French oak can tease out the best qualities of a grape. This wine is both creamy yet lean, fruity yet saline, concentrated yet tart making it a perfect match for buttery potatoes, crispy vegetables, and the delicate balance of sweet and savory notes that have made pumpkin pie such an enduring dessert.
Fun fact: The first pilgrims’ “pumpkin pie” was literally a hollowed-out pumpkin filled with spices and cream or milk that was baked whole. Too bad they didn’t have a crisp Sonoma Chardonnay to go with it!
We couldn’t resist finishing off with another Chardonnay because – well this grape comes in so many styles, there’s probably one suited to every single dish on the holiday menu! This wine is from the maritime climate of the iconic Margaret River wine region, found on the tip of Western Australia. True to its cool, wet origins and the varied soils of its terroir, this Chardonnay displays pear, nectarine, and quince along with hints of honey, marzipan, and flint all wrapped in a delicately creamy texture that finishes with a crisp acidity. With its restrained complexity and long, fresh finish, this white wine is just calling out to a buttery roast turkey, creamy side dishes like gratin, savory, herby stuffing, and crispy vegetables.
Fun fact: The day after Thanksgiving has a name of its own: "Leftovers Day". The holiday spirit continues with creative takes on turkey, stuffing, and vegetables in casserole recipes and sandwiches. All these wine styles pair perfectly with holiday leftovers too – so raise a glass!
We hope you’re inspired by our visit to the cellar and these Thanksgiving white wine pairing suggestions. Whether you go for a classic or an under-the radar white, “cheers” to your holiday dining!
