ABOUT THE WINERY

A French treasure that launched in the 19th century, Vilmart is considered by many as not only one of Champagne’s greatest grower-estates, but also one of the finest Champagne producers in the region. Nestled in the hamlet of Rilly-la-Montagne de Reims, it is renowned for its elegance and refinement, and enjoys the most truly loyal and passionate aficionados among wine enthusiasts. Called “outstanding” by Robert Parker, Vilmart is also proud of its sustainable approach to farming, and is dedicated to maintaining its current certified organic status. The nearly 28 acres of Vilmart, which currently produces 9,000 cases per annum, was first cultivated by Desire Vilmart in 1872. Its ambitious and creative new owner was determined to coax his clay and limestone soil into producing only the most magnificent grapes. Within twenty years, he got his wish. Generation after generation followed his lead, with Renan Vilmart taking the reins in 1930, and current owner and Renan’s grandson Laurent Champs assuming directorship in 1991. Working solely in cask or barrique, Champs has proactively elevated Vilmart’s reputation even further, despite numerous challenging climate cycles, and has been able to add a unique, signature blend of grace and power to each vintage. Using classic Chardonnay and Pinot Noir varietals, his wines are vibrant, nuanced and remarkably polished, making them “must-haves” among discriminating oenophiles.
