ABOUT THE WINERY

Based in Saint-Émilion, the Right Bank’s star region, Château Angelus was blessed by nature with a truly stunning and magnificent terroir. The estate is often called a 58 acre “natural amphitheater” situated on a south-facing slope that keeps the soil properly drained, impacts the ripeness of the grapes, and ultimately heightens the intensity of the wine. At the slope’s foot, summer temperatures are concentrated, and the soil’s limestone and clay composition insures the minerals needed for healthy growth. One of the younger producers, Château Angelus experienced a transformation in 1985 when Hubert de Bouard de Laforest took over the family estate. His first order of business was to renovate and update the operation, including replacing old cellar vats and implementing innovative climatizing efforts. His decisions proved sound: in 2012, the Château was granted membership into the elite club of Premier Grand Cru Classé (A). The wines of Château Angelus are known for a beautiful balance of refinement and characteristic Bordeaux intensity. Dense in tannins, they are both silky and fresh, and their menthol and spice aromas add a splendid elegance. Merlot and Cabernet Franc are the dominant varietals, with Cabernet Sauvignon used for blending. Château Angelus is surrounded by three churches, and visitors often speak of the joyful ringing of church bells. As its name suggests, the angels themselves may very well reside on the estate, orchestrating its stellar performance.
