Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux: The organisation shaping Bordeaux

Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux: The organisation shaping Bordeaux

by Westgarth Wines April 07, 2026

Bordeaux is preparing for its 2026 Wine Futures week launch (En Primeur) that takes place later this month. During this campaign, châteaux will offer early tastings of the 2025 vintage to around 5000 wine industry representatives. The resulting market insights and buying opportunities will largely influence the year ahead for Bordeaux wine. In Part I of our coverage of this pivotal event, we explore the Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux (UGCB), the multi-faceted organisation behind Wine Futures.

Following this, in Part II, we will meet François-Xavier Maroteaux, President of the UGCB and director of Saint-Julien estate, Château Branaire-Ducru. How Bordeaux is adapting to the challenges of the fine wine world during his tenure will be in focus.

What is the UGCB?

The UGCB is one of the most important and influential bodies in the international fine wine world. Synonymous with spring’s headline Bordeaux Wine Futures campaign, when wine critics, merchants, and media taste in-barrel wines and visit eminent châteaux, the season’s main tasting event is in April. Satellite tours and events take place through June.

Acting as a guardian of Bordeaux’s collective voice, the UGCB is the umbrella organization for around 130 celebrated estates that traverse the Left and Right Banks. The body champions excellence, transparency, and accessibility in one of the world’s most dynamic and esteemed wine regions, showcasing Bordeaux’s terroir diversity and history. It’s also a timeless and evolving wine area; new clientele is emerging in Asia, claiming a place alongside traditional, steadfast North American and European segments in the global Bordeaux fine-wine market.

What goes on every spring?

Few moments in the fine wine calendar are more exciting for Bordeaux fans than the annual spring Wine Futures week. Similar in prestige and occasion to Burgundy’s November “Trois Glorieuses,” En Primeur marks a highpoint in the annual global wine programme of events.

The UGCB, Bordeaux Wine Futures 2026 takes place from April 20-23. Orchestrating this event, the UGCB will see châteaux open their doors to wine professionals eager to taste the 2025 vintage, just months after harvest. This encompasses sampling from barrel across the region’s appellations. This happening is almost sacred in the wine calendar, taking place in special venues, châteaux tasting rooms, and historic barrel halls. It’s critical for wine consumers because it marks the first glimpse of the style, structure, and potential of the latest Bordeaux release. The 2025 vintage is tipped to be bold and richly fruit-forward, soon ready for early drinking, while featuring the hallmark Bordeaux structure that supports extended cellaring.

Masterclasses, technical presentations, estate visits, and market discussions take place in parallel with the industry tastings. Though not strictly an auction, Wine Futures signals pricing and market direction that will influence the global fine wine trade for the year ahead.

Historic UGCB milestones

So impactful are the activities of the UGCB, it’s surprising that this acclaimed organization has only been in existence for just over 50 years. Against a decades-long backdrop of “Parkerization”, climate change, technological development, and the growth of wine tourism, here are its key milestones:

1973: The Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux was established with a group trade trip to Japan. The aim? To unite leading estates under a shared commitment to quality and international promotion.

1980s–1990s: The UGCB expands its global influence through international tours and tastings that open up new markets to Bordeaux wines.

2015–2020: Digital transformation paves the way for virtual and hybrid tastings and events to bolster global reach.

2026: The UGCB continues to streamline its strategy under responsive and forward-thinking leadership, balancing heritage, tradition, innovation, digitization, and climate change to support the next generation of Bordeaux fans.

From heritage to modernity: What is the UGCB?

As the face of Wine Futures Week, the UGCB is often most closely associated with this spectacle. That said, when the wine industry takes its last sip of the season and returns home, the organization’s role extends much further and wider.

The organisation functions as the umbrella ambassador of Bordeaux’s most acclaimed châteaux, promoting quality, safeguarding tradition, and ensuring global visibility for the region’s grand vins. It also supports and presents the region’s storytelling, with an emphasis on how hotter vintages are influencing wine style.

Quality is not reflected solely in the classified growths of the region, like those of the famous 1855, Saint-Émilion, and Graves/Pessac ranking systems, for instance. Of course, membership includes top growths but also select unclassified properties renowned for exceptional quality. Combined, they showcase centuries of viticultural heritage, architectural majesty, and some of the world’s most distinct terroirs.

In summary, the organisation’s mandate includes:

  • Global promotion of Bordeaux’s top wines
  • Organizing Wine Futures (En Primeur) tastings and international tours
  • Safeguarding quality standards among members
  • Hosting dialogue between producers and the critics, merchants, and consumers who enjoy the region’s wines
  • Preserving the region’s reputation as a benchmark for fine wine

The vineyards

The vineyards that the UGBC represents create a broad profile, reflecting the diversity of grand crus estates across the Left and Right Banks.

Among the Bordeaux appellations represented are:

These appellations are renowned for Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc, and Sémillon, cultivated across hundreds of hectares of premium terroir. Classic Bordeaux soils are a patchwork of carefully tended gravel, clay, and limestone.

These varied and unique terroirs produce signature red, white, and sweet wines that speak unmistakably of Bordeaux in styles that have been lovingly emulated around the world. In many premium New World wine regions today, for example, eminent producers proudly challenge themselves to crafting the classic Bordeaux Blend.

The hallmarks of Bordeaux’s wines include:

Final thoughts: The future

The UGBC faces various challenges as it acts as a steward, guiding Bordeaux wines to the next generation. Key priorities include:

  • Sustainability and environmental transition

  • Preserving regional typicity while adapting to the impact of climate change on wine style

  • Greater transparency in the April Wine Futures campaign

  • Targeted engagement with younger and emerging markets

  • Promoting innovation and entrepreneurial approaches in viticulture and communication
