Memorable Mother’s Day Pairings

Memorable Mother’s Day Pairings

by Westgarth Wines May 08, 2025

With Mother’s Day just around the corner, we’ve done the legwork so you can discover and enjoy perfect wine and food pairings from breakfast to dinner.

Whatever time of day you’re celebrating, we hope our suggestions will inspire you and say loud and clear, “Thank you Mom!”.

Breakfast – Crêpes

Is there any other breakfast dish that says “you’re worth it” better than crêpes? This classic French “petit-déjeuner” looks simple, but takes skill to get its delicate textures and flavors absolutely right. You can also “taste tailor” it with a range of sweet and savory fillings from yummy chocolate spread, bananas, and fruity preserves to creamy gruyère and smoked ham or salmon and cream cheese. With so many possibilities, what wine is a perfect fit?

Hands down, it’s rosé bubbles. With its raspberry, peach, brioche, touch of ginger, and hint of salinity, a light, crisp, and creamy Pinot Noir like 2007 Taittinger Comtes Champagne Rosé Champagne starts mom’s special day with class and goes with any crêpe filling you whip up.

What nails it?

The subtle fruity flavors of this rosé fizz highlight sweet and savory tastes without dominating, while its lively effervescence also contrasts with the light, slightly crispy character of a crêpe breakfast.

Brunch – Eggs Benedict

Brunch and Eggs Benedict go hand in hand. This mouth-watering, mid-morning dish keeps the munchies away without being too filling, leaving room for more celebrations later in the day. Poached egg perched on a slice of tasty ham or bacon fitted snugly on a toasty English muffin base, soaked with delicious Hollandaise sauce, all offer an explosion of umami, savory, smoky notes, fiery pepper, and tart citrus. Such a fusion of flavors calls for a versatile wine.

We’re sticking to bubbles – and not only because it’s still before lunch! The 2016 Agrapart, Avizoise Extra Brut features blossom, lemon zest, confit orange, and biscuity notes, and vibrant bubbles in a layered, intense Champagne that just wraps itself around Eggs Benedict.

What nails it?

Orchard and citrus fruit, plus toasty, bready hints, complement and contrast with the varied flavors and textures of this brunch recipe. Its fresh tartness and vibrant effervescence cut through the creaminess of the eggs and Hollandaise sauce.

Lunch – Parmesan spring chicken

A perfect Mother’s Day lunch dish is Lemon and Herb Roast Chicken. Aromatic and fresh with zesty lemon and earthy herbs like rosemary, parsley, and thyme, the savory, crispy coat contrasts with the tender, juicy, flavorful chicken underneath. Comforting and casual but classic and elegant at the same time, this lunch dish needs a wine that enhances its delectable contrasting and complementary textures and tastes. Our pick is a rich yet lively Sonoma Chardonnay.

The 2021 Aubert Chardonnay Lauren features peach and lime in a rich body with a delicate and pleasing oily mouthfeel while remaining fresh, energetic, and vibrant. Aging in 80% new oak adds woody notes that add the final touches to a white that’s ideal for chicken recipes.

What nails it?

This Sonoma Chardonnay is a great match for lemon-herb roast chicken, courtesy of its lively citrus which cuts through this dish’s savory, crackling texture. Its oaky, earthy depth is the perfect backdrop for the herby, roasted notes featured in this dish while its fruit contrasts with the delicate chicken flavors.

Afternoon tea

Afternoon tea from the British Isles has taken the world by storm, and no surprise. What’s not to like about a selection of bite-sized sweets and savories that go as well with a glass of celebratory wine as they do with a cup of tea! A great way to treat mom on Mother’s Day, the choice of goodies you can serve is endless and can be tailored to mama’s tastes. That said, there are must-have staples for this afternoon mini feast like buttery, creamy jam scones, light, fluffy Victoria Sponge cake, and curried egg sandwiches (preferably without the crusts). The question is, which wine can pair with all of these flavors and textures successfully? No contest here: A Sauternes fits the bill.

We’ve handpicked the 2019 d'Yquem for its orchard fruit, florals, mango, peach, and menthol hints plus wash of Sauvignon Blanc-driven freshness. Its rich yet vibrant profile matches the broad range of creamy, crispy textures and spicy, sweet flavors to perfection.

What nails it?

The sweetness of this Sauternes goes with both the confectionary notes and fiery flavors in this diverse spread, while its slightly viscous depth and crisp character make it a perfect match for the textures of Afternoon Tea.

Dinner – Gnocchi and steak bites or mushroom and blue cheese

Not too heavy for a spring evening but full of soul, gnocchi dishes offer variety for all tastes. There are no rules – just so long as it’s delicious – which our two suggestions are! Serve fresh gnocchi with olive oil, pan-seared tenderloin chunks, and sautéed tomato with a touch of seasoning and Parmesan shavings. Alternatively, for veggies, substitute the beef with porcini mushrooms, truffle oil, and blue cheese. Both takes are flavorful, with savory, umami, and creamy profiles that cry out for a classic red like the 2015 Tignanello. Richly fruity with spice, leather, smoky hints, and polished tannins, this iconic Super Tuscan matches the depth and heartiness of these gnocchi recipes, as well as the legendary nature of mom!

What nails it?

A blend led by Sangiovese, this red is decadent (in the classiest of ways!) enough to pair with these indulgent dishes, matching the smoky, savory hints and balancing the cheesy creaminess. The red fruit complements each recipe’s tomato flavors. Likewise, the robustness of the ingredients goes toe-to-toe with the wine’s tannins and higher alcohol content. All in all, it’s a simple but heavenly menu to end Mother’s Day on a high note.

Happy Mother’s Day!
