The Most Expensive Wine in the World

The Most Expensive Wine in the World

by Westgarth Wines October 15, 2018

Sotheby’s sold a bottle of 1945 Romanee-Conti for 558,000 dollars in a record-breaking auction. The vintage has a strong record. Previously, the highest sale on the books was a three-liter bottle Bordeaux. Part of what drove the price up on the DRC was provenance—the bottle came from the cellar of Robert Drouhin of Burgundy’s famed Maison Joseph Drouhin. It was purchased directly from Romanée-Conti. The desire to buy premium wine has also been driven by China. Well-off Chinese wine investors began with Bordeaux and have been pivoting to Burgundy of late—and it shows! In the price tag, that is.
