Fully dedicated to Pinot Noir, Chambertin-Clos-de-Bèze is one of the most highly regarded grand cru vineyards in the Côte d’Or. A lieu-dit of Le Chambertin, it rests on the northern part of the vineyard, accounting for 37 acres and composed of limestone and clay soils.
Balanced water levels and the continental climate contribute to the power of the grapes grown here, making them acidic as well as intensely flavorful. The vineyard has an important historical connection in Napoleon, who is said to have enjoyed Clos-de-Bèze wines. Such notoriety did not go unnoticed; in 1847, Gevrey decided to append the name of its famous vineyard to its own, renaming the town Gevrey-Chambertin, and allowed bordering vineyards to do the same.
Clos-de-Bèze is the only neighboring vineyard that instead uses the name as a prefix, making it all the more distinctive. Top Producers: Domaine Armand Rousseau, Domaine Faiveley
